A Novel Therapy
The Power of Story
Can you remember a character who felt real? Someone whose choices, struggles, or courage stayed with you long after finishing the book?
Maybe it was the character who faced their fears
Or fought for love
Or refused to give up on themselves.
Sometimes those stories move us because we recognize ourselves in them.
That idea sits at the heart of A Novel Therapy.
Why Do Stories Matter?
Stories have always been one of the ways human beings make meaning of their lives. Long before psychology existed as a field, people turned to myth and storytelling to explore the difficult questions of life.
In my work as a psychotherapist and educator, I began to notice something remarkable: people often come to understand themselves more deeply through the stories that move them.
What first drew my attention to this idea were conversations with clients who described how unexpectedly meaningful their book clubs had become. They shared how discussions about fictional characters often opened the door to conversations about their own lives: their relationships, their fears, their hopes, and the choices they were struggling to make.
As both a therapist and a lifelong voracious reader, this realization felt deeply familiar.
Books have always had the power to move us.
Sometimes it is the novel we return to again and again for comfort.
Sometimes it is the story that frustrates us because a character makes choices we wish they wouldn’t.
And sometimes it is the character whose journey feels uncannily close to our own.
Those moments of emotional connection are not accidental.
A character’s journey can reflect our own fears.
A fictional relationship can illuminate patterns in our real ones.
A moment of courage on the page can help us imagine courage in our own lives
Over time, these observations led me to develop, A Novel Therapy, which explores why certain stories and characters resonate so deeply with readers, and how those emotional responses can illuminate patterns in our own identity, relationships, and personal growth.
A Novel Therapy was created to explore this powerful intersection between story, psychology, and self-discovery.
